My name is Sharene Kirby and I have been teaching for 23 years. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Special Education from Western Carolina University and received an add on license for Pre-K/Kindergarten through East Carolina University. I have taught my way across the state of North Carolina. I have taught in Wilkes, Stanly, and Wake Counties and finally ended up in Craven County! This year begins my 13th year in Craven County. I have taught a little bit of everything over the course of my teaching career. I began as a 3-5 Self Contained ECP teacher and then moved to ECP Resource. I then went back to Self Contained ECP, moved on to Pre-Kindergarten and then back to teaching ECP Self Contained. After many years of serving children at different grade levels and different capacities, I do believe I have found my niche!
I am beginning my 9th year as an Exceptional Children’s Inclusive Preschool teacher here at JT Barber. My classroom is composed of both typically developing children and children who are developmentally delayed as identified with an IEP. The purpose of our classroom is to provide children with developmental delays and typically developing children the opportunity to grow and learn together in an environment that promotes cooperation and acceptance of individual differences, using developmentally appropriate practices in a variety of environments.
My beliefs are that children are children first, before they are children with special needs and early intervention has a decisive and long lasting impact on how children develop and learn. I believe “play”, combined with adult facilitation and interaction is powerful and I believe all children deserve the opportunity to enter school ready to succeed!
